Drama in Galatia: 'Seminar June 11-12, 2022'

Drama in Galatia Seminar

Drama in Galatia Seminar

This 8-session seminar will emphasize Paul’s worldview, culture, and circumstances as interpretive necessities to Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia. We will try to read Paul, as Paul, for what he was: a brilliant, rabbinically-educated, Second Temple-era Jew who encountered Jesus in resurrection and in His Body–the new community. This eventually resulted in Paul’s radical, difficult to understand (2 Pet. 3:16) and at times even outrageous interpretations of, and assertions from, the Scriptures. We will not romanticize, artificially harmonize, nor sterilize his conflicts and the real difficulties they produced–be they interpersonal, doctrinal, or church-related. There was real drama in Galatia.  Continue reading

The New Humanity: 'Monday Morning Musings - October 19, 2021'

Centuries of emphasis on where one’s “soul goes when you die,” has left another facet of the Gospel utterly ignored. In the cross Jesus did not just assure some invisible future state of existence. He was inaugurating, as the first of many like him, a new type of human, a new type of human family, and a new sphere of human existence. The Gospel of Jesus is for planet earth, not the sweet by and by.

Glorious Reconciliation: 'Monday Morning Musings - October 26, 2021'

Jesus became the judge who was judged. Rather than meeting injustice with violence and retribution, He released forgiveness to his persecutors and His Father gave the Spirit of the Son as a gift! He makes enemies friends! The Gospel begins and ends with: “Peace, don’t be afraid.”

Witness – The Church, the Body of Christ: 'Monday morning Musings - October 12, 2021'

The Christian community, the church, the ekklesia, the Body of Christ is supposed to be the full-spectrum incarnation of the resurrected life of Christ, in the flesh, on earth.  The Church IS the witness.

Behold How They Love One Another: 'Monday Morning Musings - October 4, 2021'

There is more to “witnessing” than haranguing unbelievers with propositional truth from the Bible. Doing so is one of the least effective, and often most offensive, means of “sharing the gospel.”

Gentleness – Jesus Style: 'Monday Morning Musing - February 1, 2021'

Like humility and meekness, biblical gentleness is not a human personality trait. It is a spiritual awareness of our one-ness with each other in weakness. It is a quality that understands and lives from a relational awareness of mitigating circumstances. It does not demand its just due from stark legal, quid-pro-quo dynamics. Gentleness is like mercy. It is a tempering quality to the severity that is always inherent in naked justice.

Humility, Meekness, and Gentleness – Introduction: 'Monday Morning Musings - December 28, 2020'

We all bring filters to the Scriptures when we read them. Our cultural values and ethics always intrude into and conform the text to what makes us comfortable. This is especially the case when it comes to what many believers think constitute the virtues of humility, meekness and gentleness. They are not just pleasant human personality traits. This episode introduces the topic that will follow on for the next five weeks.

The Incarnation: 'Monday Morning Musing - December 21, 2020'

The significance of God in the flesh often gets lost in the familiar parts of the Christmas narrative. Why was the incarnation necessary? Just so someone could die to “satisfy” the Father? Jesus as God incarnate, fully human, is more than a metaphysical commodity to sustain an atonement theory.

Jesus is Greater Than Moses: 'Monday Morning Musings - December 14, 2020'

Everyone has a hermeneutic. That is, how they approach and interpret Scripture. For me, Jesus is the final Word of God to humanity and the precise, exact representation of the nature of God as our Father. Jesus’s presentation of His Father is superior to every other person, and every other presentation of God recorded in Scripture. (See John 1:18 and others). The shadow is not the reality. This is how Paul and others described the Jewish (Old Testament) Scriptures. Jesus said: When you have seen me, you have seen the Father. If we try to put characters from the Jewish Scriptures on the same authority level as Jesus, we are going to have difficulty with many beliefs and practices recorded in the Christian Old Testament. We will end up with a schizophrenic God-image (In spite of tortuous attempts at “harmonization”). This is a foundational issue that everyone is going to have to handle, one way or the other. For too many alleged followers of Christ, the veil of Moses is still on their faces.

Pizzeria or Library?: 'Monday Morning Musings - November 2, 2020'

If you are hungry, you look for a restaurant, not a library. Jesus said: Feed my sheep, not intellectually inform them. Paul describes the Church as the One Loaf for the world: a strong metaphor implying being “consumed” by others as foundational to our calling and mission. Paul speaks of an “aroma of Christ.”  It is not difficult to get people who are craving pizza into a pizzeria. The question for us as Christ-followers becomes: What are we? A pizzeria or a library. Too commonly it is the latter and then we wonder why no one is eating: we are not putting out any aroma, and what we are presenting isn’t food.  We just have strongly held convictions about “the Bible.” Many “evangelistic” modalities are like expecting people to find food in a library. The kingdom of Jesus does not operate that way.
