This 8-session seminar will emphasize Paul’s worldview, culture, and circumstances as interpretive necessities for Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia. We will try to read Paul, as Paul, for what he was: a brilliant, rabbinically-educated, Second Temple-era Jew who encountered Jesus in resurrection and in His Body–the new community. This eventually resulted in Paul’s radical, difficult to understand (2 Pet. 3:16) and at times even outrageous interpretations of, and assertions from, the Scriptures. We will not romanticize, artificially harmonize, nor sterilize his conflicts and the real difficulties they produced–be they interpersonal, doctrinal, or church-related. There was real drama in Galatia.
Simplifying concepts can begin as an honorable effort to make things understandable to as many people as possible. However, the accumulated effect of centuries of over-simplification often distorts and ultimately misrepresents a topic. Growing up in Lutheran-influenced Evangelicalism, I was taught that Galatians is simply about “justification by faith” or “law versus grace” (alleged religious works-righteousness Judaism versus grace-based Christianity, etc.). At best, these are over-simplifications of lesser elements of greater, more complicated and more profound themes in the letter. At worst they are misrepresentations, distortions, and half-truths that emasculate the virile, vibrant and cosmic, reality-altering Gospel message that Paul preached.
I hope for two outcomes of this effort:
- That your reading of Galatians will never be the same. I hope it will explode for you with the pulsating human drama that it contains–that you will experience the closest thing to time-travel short of a quantum leap!
- That the depth, breadth and marvel of the Good News in the Person of Jesus will sweep you off your feet. My prayer and hope is that you will hear and experience The Good News like you may never have before.
