Church Refugee Sanity Guide – Part Nine – Evangelism

In this installment of the Church Refugee Sanity Guide, I take a fresh look at the topic of evangelism and discipleship apart from traditional theology, mindsets, and methods.

What do evangelism and discipleship look like in a faith context outside of a traditional church expression? Reworking the theology and practices of what evangelism is, and how it is done outside of organized Christian religion, opens up vistas of new opportunity in a “gospel-fatigued,” post-Christian culture. Untethering evangelism from the weight of Protestant Evangelical/Fundamentalist presuppositions, traditions and methods is liberating, effective, and above all easy and fruitful. When a transactional economy of exchange that treats people like commodities in an exercise of our religious insecurities is abandoned for a relational dynamic based in love and service, both evangelism and discipleship are gloriously transformed.
